Classic album covers celebrated by the Royal Mail

January 7, 2010

The Royal Mail has decided to release a brand new set of stamps celebrating the artwork of some of the most recognizable album covers from the last forty years. The set of ten stamps was officially launched by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page. The artwork for the 1971 Led Zeppelin IV album is featured on one of the stamps. At the launch Page pointed out that one of the things that makes the picture of an old man carrying a bundle of wood so special is that nobody has any idea who the old man was or who painted the picture. He said that that artwork was taken from a postcard that lead singer Robert Plant found in a junkshop in Reading. It was then nailed up onto the wall of a demolished house in Dudley and an iconic album cover which helped to sell 32 million copies was created.

Julietta Edgar who is head of Special Stamps at the Royal Mail said that over the years the album cover has been a canvas on which some of the greatest artists in the world have really been able to express themselves. She went on to say that she hoped that the people who used or collected the stamps would enjoy the album artwork in its smallest format yet. Other album covers to have been selected for the collection include London Calling by The Clash, Screamadelica by Primal Scream, A Rush Of Blood To The Head by Coldplay and Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield.
