Christmas number one not yet guaranteed for X Factor winner

Although X Factor winner Joe McElderry has hit the number one position on iTunes with his new single The Climb, his fiercest competition for the Christmas number one spot, Rage Against The Machine, also seem to be putting in a strong performance and could be an upset for the eighteen-year-old as well as for Simon Cowell. McElderry may be in front on iTunes but Amazon say Killing In The Name is just creeping ahead and HMV say that it is beating The Climb by ten to one.

McElderry can take some comfort in the knowledge that the results are from download sales and he could push out in front once the CD of his single hits the nation’s shelves.

The 1992 song by Rage Against The Machine has become the unlikely contender for the U.K. singles chart number one position after a couple decided to set up an internet campaign on Facebook and Twitter to block yet another Simon Cowell karaoke act securing the top spot. The song is packed with expletives and one of the campaign’s founders said it would be great to have all those swear words at the top of the charts for Christmas.

Martin Talbot, managing director at the Official Charts Company said that this year’s competition was likely to be the closest in years by such different records. HMV’s Gennaro Castaldo pointed out that the competition would be a close one but that nothing could be predicted until McElderry’s Miley Cyrus cover physically hit the shops.
