Christmas lights go on in London

November 4, 2009

The Christmas lights on Regent Street and Oxford Street in London have now been turned on. They will illuminate the capital’s streets every day after dark from now through Christmas until January 4th next year. This year both sets of lights were simultaneously turned on for the first time ever at exactly 6.15 in the evening. Flicking the switch on Oxford Street was American actor and comedian Jim Carrey. The lights follow the theme of Charles Dickens classic tale, A Christmas Carol. In Regent Street British actor Colin Firth took charge of the ceremony. Both actors star in a Disney animated remake of A Christmas Carol and the illuminations were set to be followed by world premiers of the film at three London cinemas.

Another star of the new movie is Bob Hoskins who was at St. Paul’s Cathedral also leading celebrations. Hoskins joined in with the Christmas cheer as the St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir under the leadership of Andrea Bocelli attempted to secure the record for the most ever people singing a Christmas carol. The attempt went out live on screens erected for viewers in Oxford Circus and Leicester Square where revelers were asked to join in.

In the lead up to the lights being turned on acts such as Spandau Ballet, Peter Andre and the Noisettes performed for the crowds. Carey, who is the voice of Scrooge in the new film joked that he had wanted the Disney film to be a summer release but that researchers had explained to him that the films material might be more appropriate for a Christmas roll out.
