Christmas is already upon half the U.K.’s shoppers

A recent survey shows that in an effort to spread the cost of Christmas, half of all shoppers across the U.K. have already begun planning for the festive season. The survey commissioned by supermarket giant, Asda shows that half of those polled have already started to purchase their Christmas presents.

A spokesperson for Asda said that although it might seem a little bizarre to start stocking Christmas items this early, it is what customers are demanding. A third of the shoppers interviewed said that this year they planned to keep their spending down with eighty percent saying that they would like to keep their budget below the £250 mark. Last year the average spend on festive goods was £320 per person.

The Asda survey asked 8,000 people about their shopping habits and found that in an additional move to cut down the cost of Christmas, one in ten people had decided that this year they will not be sending friends and loved ones any Christmas cards.

Last month shoppers in Rochdale were amazed to see employees of the city council erecting Christmas decorations and lights including a huge Noel sign. When asked what the council was playing at, it answered that the decision to put the decorations up was not just to mark the Christian festival but also the holidays celebrated by other faiths. This didn’t quite explain how decorations that only referred to Christmas were supposed to represent other faiths.

Some however have decided to revolt against the early stocking of Christmas goodies on the country’s shelves. The Movement for the Containment of Christmas recently glued the door of a charity shop shut because it was selling Christmas cards far too early.
