Christmas divorce hotline sparks outrage
December 25, 2009
A Scottish legal firm has been accused of being the equivalent of an ‘ambulance chaser’ of couples who may be having emotional problems over the festive period. Gibson Kerr, a firm run by husband and wife Scott and Fiona Rasmusen has announced that it will open a hotline for any individuals who require legal advice on how to leave their partners over Christmas. Those who find themselves unable to cope with their spouses are told that they can leave a message on the hotline and a solicitor will get back to them the very same day.
Church leaders as well as relationship experts have been outraged by the service describing it as extremely inappropriate. Representatives of the firm have hit back by saying that in some cases their legal advice can be a way of saving relationships. They also pointed out that during the holidays it is very hard for couples who have decided that they want to end their marriages to be able to get legal advice on the matter.
Convenor of the Church of Scotland’s church and society council, Rev. Ian Galloway advised any couple who found themselves at odds with each other at a time when tensions can run high to take a deep breath and not make any rash decisions on the spur of the moment.
A spokesperson for Relate, the country’s leading relationship counseling service, said that Christmas is a time when problems in relationships can come to the surface. She went on to say that couples having trouble should first seek relationship counseling before picking up the phone to a lawyer.
