Cheap nightclub drink prices condemned by police
November 18, 2009
A nightclub owner in Darlington has been defending her decision to offer customers cheap drinks after being condemned by local police. Barbara Vowles who runs the Chambers nightclub in the town said that she had been left with no other choice but to start offering customers drinks that go for as little a sixty-nine pence on a Thursday night. She said that other clubs in the area were offering similar deals on drinks so she had to match them or risk going out of business.
The government has introduced strict policies on alcoholic drink promotions such as banning all you can drink and speed drinking offers. However it has been unable to place limitations on the prices that establishments can offer drinks at. The Office of Fair Trading has said that such moves would restrict competition.
Ms. Vowels has pointed out that she does not necessarily want to serve cheap drinks but that it is a necessity and has asked the government to look into placing a minimum price on certain alcoholic beverages. She says that people will only be able to purchase one drink at a time and that if anyone appeared to be drunk then they would be refused at the bar.
Durham Police are concerned about the new low prices and say that they will be watching behavior at the establishment very closely. Inspector Steve Steen says that Chambers is situated in a partially residential area and that he is concerned that local residents could be disturbed by people attracted by the lure of cheap drinks.
