Caravans in short supply
August 25, 2009
The used caravan and motor home market has been booming this year causing many dealerships to run low on stock.
In Cumbria, Bardsea Leisure has seen its stock drop from 45 units to just 9 and Knowepark, a Scottish dealership, saw its stock of 80 used caravans fly out of the door and says that it only has 15 units left. One of the reasons for this lack of second hand stock is the lack of trade-ins. People are buying up caravans as a way of investing in their holidays.
The trend to stay at home rather than spend money on a holiday abroad means that there has been resurgence in the demand for cheap holidaying within the U.K. Bookings at caravan sites have risen by a third this year causing many site owners to look into expansion.
The demand for new caravans has also seen a rapid rise with all of the 2008 stock now sold and most of this year’s stock also gone. 2010 models are already being presold and with new models still to come onto the market, some predict a bumper year.
Motor homes are also selling well with coachbuilts and used panel van conversions being extremely popular. Even the holiday home caravan sector, which has seen a decline in recent years, seems to be booming.
