Brits abroad most likely to be arrested in the U.A.E.

A new British Behaviour Abroad report released by the U.K. Foreign Office shows that of all the foreign countries in the world, Britons are most likely to be arrested in the U.A.E.

The Persian Gulf is home to 55,000 Brits and 1.1 million people visited the area from the U.K. last year. 294 Britons were arrested in the U.A.E. in the past year, 48 of these arrests were for drug offences. The U.A.E. is Islamic and so there are stricter rules regarding modesty and temperance than many Brits are used to. Alcohol, drugs and indecency are rather more frowned upon than in other popular holiday destinations.

Foreign Office Minister, Chris Bryant said: “Researching the local laws and customs before you travel could avoid time in a foreign jail.”

Last year an unmarried British couple were arrested for having sex whilst drunk on a beach in Dubai, and an English mother spent three months in jail for adultery.

The report shows that between April 2008 and March 2009 6,919 people from the U.K. were either arrested or detained whilst abroad. Other top destinations for being arrested were Spain, the U.S., Greece, Cyprus and Thailand.
