British Couple Sentenced to Jail for Kissing in Dubai Restaurant

A British couple has been accused of inappropriately kissing in public in Dubai after a mother said that she saw them while dining out with her daughter. Now the couple, who are said to be only friends, are facing a month in prison.

The pair – 24-year-old Ayman Najafi and 25-year-old Charlotte Lewis – were said to be drinking, touching each other intimately and kissing at the Jumeirah Beach Residence restaurant last November. They were arrested, and the police confiscated their passports so that they couldn’t leave until they completed their jail time. However, their lawyer, Khalaf al-Hosani, says that they were released on bail and fined £178 for consuming alcohol illegally.

It’s understood that the two friends made an appeal to the Dubai court on Sunday but have 3 weeks to wait until a verdict is given on April 4. Hosani says that they didn’t inappropriately kiss, because they are only friends and were simply greeting each other how they normally do – apparently it was only a kiss on the cheek. However, the Dubai misdemeanors court was told by the mother who made the complaint that she was offended by their behavior while she was eating with her child.

This makes the third time in less than 2 years where a British couple has been alleged to breaking the country’s decency laws. In 2008, a couple was accused of having drunken sex in public while not being married, but they were cleared of the charges. Then in just January, another couple was cleared of accusations that they were having sex without being married, but only after producing a marriage certificate.
