Britain braces itself for more snow
December 17, 2009
Weather forecasters have warned Britain to prepare itself for continuing freezing weather and the possibility of more snow. In the south-east it has been predicted that more snow will fall throughout the day as well as on Friday. The announcement is likely to herald the usual traffic chaos, delays and employees not being able to make it into work.
Bookmakers have shown concerns that the cold weather could mean that there will be snow on Christmas day and have slashed the odds accordingly. William Hill spokesman, Rupert Adams said that this year is the first for a long time where bookmakers were in serious risk of having to pay out to those who predicted a white Christmas.
The first snows of winter fell yesterday after a freezing night where in some areas the temperature plunged to -7.5C. Sarah Holland from the Met Office warned that up to eight inches of snow could fall over higher ground tomorrow making it perfect for a bit of tobogganing. She went on to warn drivers that they should try to get constant weather updates so as not to put themselves in danger. She predicted that the snow was going to settle on the ground and that conditions would therefore become hazardous.
The countries gritters came out in force to try and protect the roads yesterday. Although the government has dismissed claims that councils only have enough grit to cope with a few days of freezing whether the AA said that it could become a real problem.
