Brad and Angelina Sue Newspaper over Split Rumor
February 9, 2010
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are suing News of the World, the British newspaper, after it published false allegations that the unmarried couple was seeing a divorce lawyer to get a separation. The story was published January 24, sparking a lot of talk around the world as other mainstream news outlets began republishing the claims. One magazine even published a spinoff story about Jennifer Aniston being the cause.
News of the World claimed in their publication that Brad and Angelina saw a divorce lawyer in December and signed an agreement that would split their assets and decide custody of the their children. The newspaper also claimed that the separation was immediately effective.
Keith Schilling, the lawyer for Angelina and Brad, said that the republications of the story were intrusive, and they can confirm unequivocally that the allegations are false. News of the World failed to apologize within reason, he continued, adding that the couple asked for a retraction to be published.
Furthermore, Shillings Lawyers received a letter from Sorrell Trope, the lawyer claimed by news outlets to be overseeing the separation, saying that he has never met either Brad or Angelina. He added that he has never been involved with them either, and this is the same for others in his firm.
The British newspaper hasn’t commented on the couple suing them. The story they published was soon found to be false after family and friends of Angelina and Brad came forward to dispute the claims. Many mainstream news sources published stories that the allegations were false, but there has been much question on the matter until now.
