Binmen strike likely to spread across Scotland
August 4, 2009
The work to rule by binmen that has affected many residential areas of Edinburgh is about to spread west to Glasgow. Unions are reporting that street sweepers and roads and park employees working for Glasgow council are set to begin an indefinite strike on 10 August.
According to insider reports, refuse collection in Glasgow is almost certain to be affected, as workers will not want to cross picket lines.
The Unison, GMB and Unite unions are leading the strike over what they are calling “life-changing” shift pattern changes. The upcoming labour action follows an ongoing unofficial dispute in the capital, which has meant that many of the city’s residents have not seen bins emptied for weeks.
Edinburgh’s 1,000 binmen are working to rule due a dispute over changes to the way that they are paid, which they claim effectively reduces their wages from £18,000 to £12,000.
Officials had revealed a plan to clean up the capital as it anticipates the arrivals of thousands of visitors for festival events.
A private contractor has been brought in work through the night, covering the overtime normally worked by council employees.
