Asylum seekers untraceable without finger prints
August 24, 2009
According to French sources, migrants staying illegally around the port of Calais waiting to cross into the U.K. are removing their finger prints in an attempt to avoid being identified.
Without being able to check records against finger prints, the European authorities are finding it difficult to come up with data that shows whether or not someone has a criminal record or has tried previously to seek asylum.
Gerard Gavory, a Calais prefect, said that out of the 1000 people waiting to cross into the UK as asylum seekers, at least 50 had removed their finger prints.
This can be achieved in a number of different ways. Acid of Polyurethane glue can be applied to the finger tips to remove the pattern or knives may be used to scar the end of the fingers. The most popular way according to authorities is to use a hot oven to burn off the pattern.
Asylum seekers have a record of their finger prints on Eurodoc, the European Union Computer Database. If this database shows that an asylum seeker has previously been refused asylum, then it is very likely that they will be returned to their home country. The system is used to stop people coming into the U.K. to claim benefits whilst they wait for their case to be heard.
