Asda sued over dead frog in wine glass
October 5, 2010
Popular UK grocer Asda is being sued after a woman discovered a dead frog floating in a glass of wine from a bottle she had bought from the grocery chain.
Isolde Beesley of Lutterworth in Leicestershire said that she was enjoying a glass of the grocer’s own label – Moscatel de Valencia – on boxing day with her family when she discovered the frog in her glass. Beesley said she removed the amphibian from her wine as soon as she noticed it. Describing the intruder as grey and not indigenous to the farmlands of Lutterworth, she said that it had appeared to have been dead for a long time.
According to Beesley, employees at the Fosse Park store, where she tried to return it, thought that she was attempting to play a joke. A spokesman for Asda said that the grocer was at a loss as to how it could have happened. He also stated that it would be nearly impossible for the amphibian to have found its way into the bottle of wine during manufacturing.
The spokesman further stated that the only conclusion the supermarket chain could reach is that the frog got into the beverage at some point during its journey from Spain to the customer’s glass.
Beesley has also said that she has been experiencing stomach pains since the incident and has hired legal council to seek compensation from the grocer. Environmental health services have taken the frog into custody.
