Archbishop tells Brits to grow their own fruit and veg

October 13, 2009

The Archbishop of Canterbury is calling for households in the U.K. to stop buying foreign grown fruit and vegetables and start growing their own on allotments and in the garden. Dr Rowan Williams says that the price of buying vegetables that are out of season from countries like Africa has meant that people are losing touch with nature and dramatically contributing to the amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere.

Speaking out against the consumer lifestyle he said that people should realize that not all fruit and vegetables would be naturally available in the U.K. all year round and that learning to eat seasonal, home grown produce could greatly reduce pressures put on the environment from flying vegetables in from abroad. He pointed out that he was doing his bit by eating food that came directly from the gardens of Lambeth Palace.

He said that he realized that many poorer countries relied on food exports to keep their economies healthy and said that he wasn’t suggesting an overnight cessation of importing seasonal fruits and vegetables. He went on to point out that consumerism and economic growth were simply not sustainable and called for politicians to look at other ways of achieving a sustainable society that was not fueled by the constant pursuit of material wealth.
