Another earthquake victim is found alive in Haiti
January 27, 2010
The window for finding any more survivors of the Haiti earthquake should have been well and truly closed by now. However, just as hope has all but evaporated one more person has been pulled out alive from beneath the rubble. U.S. troops started to use heavy machinery to dig for the survivor after Haitians searching through the rubble heard a faint cry for help. A thirty-one-year-old man with a broken leg and facial injuries eventually emerged covered in dust. He had apparently survived the initial earthquake which all but destroyed the island but was buried when a building collapsed two days later, possibly as one of the many aftershocks was felt. He had therefore managed to keep himself alive for twelve days. According to a doctor the man had managed to survive on a small supply of water which had run out on the morning of the day he was discovered. He is apparently severely dehydrated but other than the injuries to his leg and face is surprisingly well. The survivor was found under a building on the Rue de Miracles in the capital of Port-au-Prince and is now recovering in hospital.
Amongst the celebrities helping to raise money to help with relief efforts in Haiti is John Travolta. The film star has flown his own plane to the Caribbean with his actress wife Kelly Preston. Travolta has delivered four tonnes of medical equipment and army rations to the island. He has also flown in medics and volunteer ministers from the Church of Scientology.
