Anger from TOGs over Chris Evans appointment

September 7, 2009

News that Chris Evans is to take over from Terry Wogan to host Britain’s most popular radio show has angered many fans.

It is expected that Chris Evans will be hosting the Radio 2 breakfast show by March next year, but some insiders predict that he may be in Wogan’s chair sooner, perhaps by the end of this year. The move follows Terry Wogan’s decision to slowly wind down his television and radio commitments. It also sees a dramatic turnaround in the fortunes of Chris Evans who was sacked by the BBC 12 years ago for repeatedly not turning up to host Radio 1’s breakfast show.

Chris Evans returned to the BBC in 2005 and is at present hosting a drive time show on weekdays. In 2006 whilst receiving an award for Music Radio Personality of the Year from Sony the presenter thanked the BBC for allowing him a second chance.

Although the BBC has not yet commented on the situation it was made clear that many of Terry Wogan’s 8 million listeners were not keen on the decision.

A number of TOGs, or Terry’s Old Geezers of Gals as listeners to his shows like to call themselves, have written to the Radio 2 website to say that after Wogan leaves they will no longer tune into the show. Some have called the decision terrible wondering why the BBC would swap Wogan’s witty banter with stupid things going on and shouting. One poster has called for those who chose Chris Evans over other possible choices to be sacked.
