Anger at shock X Factor result causes website to crash
November 10, 2009
Simon Cowell has been accused of going for the money rather than the talent after he stunned fans of ITV’s X Factor by keeping Jedward in the running whilst ending Lucie Jones’ chance for the title. Message boards on X Factor’s website were so inundated by furious fans after the results were announced that they actually crashed.
The messages accused Simon Cowell of backtracking on weeks of criticism of John and Edward’s performances and singing capability because he now realizes that keeping them in the show is a ratings winner. He may be right because a record breaking 16.6 million people turned their television sets to the ITV channel to see the results.
Lucie Jones and John and Edward had been forced into the show’s sing off because they had both received the least amounts of votes from the public. Cowell could have chosen Lucie and removed an act that he used to dislike so much that he promised to leave the country if they won. However he didn’t and as Lucie had received the fewest public votes she was told that it would be her that was going home. Her supporters in the crowd booed as the result was read out and she burst into tears.
Messages put up onto the X Factor website by technicians after the message boards crashed said that they were trying their hardest to get the site back in action. They said that the shock exit of Lucie from the show and the sheer amount of public anger at the decision had caused a meltdown on the message boards.
