Americans and Australians show increased interest in the U.K.
October 1, 2009
A new report by Hitwise, a company that tracks activity by internet users, shows that the number of people in the U.S. and Australia using the web to find out about flights to the U.K. has risen by over 50% in the last twelve months.
Hitwise researcher, Robin Goad says that a weak pound is one of the main factors in getting people from Australia and the U.S. interested in travelling to Britain. The most popular destination searched for by internet users from both countries was London, followed by Edinburgh. Goad also said that people were also interested in the U.K.’s budget airline sector suggesting that they might be looking at London as a destination before flying onto other European countries. Interest in Ryanair’s website from American customers has increased by 8.7% percent this year according to Hitwise and Australians looking at the easyJet site has risen a massive 50.4% over the same period.
The most popular search term used by Americans interested in the U.K. was ‘map of England’. For Australians it was ‘car hire U.K.’ Travellers looking at flights from the U.S. to the U.K. were searching Cheapflights.com most often followed by British Airways.
The news will be very welcome to the U.K. tourist industry. The recession has seen many companies face troubled times and any reports that people from the U.K.’s most important tourist markets are showing interest in coming to Britain should boost confidence.
