Late on Sunday, an aircraft with over 200 passengers on board went missing over the Atlantic Ocean.
All contact with the Air France Airbus A330-200, on route to Paris from Rio de Janeiro, was lost after the plane left the coast of Brazil.
The aircraft departed from Rio de Janeiro on Sunday evening, and was due to arrive at Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport on Monday morning – at around 10:15am UK time.
Air France posted a message on its website that stated: “We have no information about that flight.”
A spokesperson for Brazil’s Air Force said that a search was underway near the island of Fernando de Noronha, around two hundred miles off the country’s north-eastern coast.
The spokesperson added that said the Air Force began its search and rescue mission after the plane ceased regular radio contact.
An airline safety expert in the UK commented: “It’s almost unthinkable for a western European airline just to go missing like this.”
It was reported that there were 216 passengers and 12 crew members on board the flight. Contact with the Airbus 330-200 was lost at around 7:00am UK time on Monday.
