Aerosmith cancels tour following Tyler injury
August 15, 2009
On Thursday, Aerosmith announced that the rest of its summer tour would be cancelled, nearly a week after the band’s lead singer was injured a fall from the stage during a performance in South Dakota.
The band issued a statement that read, in part: “Due to injuries Steven Tyler sustained last week when he fell from the stage during a concert in Sturgis, South Dakota, doctors have advised the lead singer to take the time to properly recuperate from the accident that resulted in a broken shoulder and stitches to his head.”
Tyler’s accident occurred on August 5 during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally concert held in South Dakota.
The lead singer was dancing as the band played ‘Love in an Elevator’ when he fell off the stage. Following the fall, he was taken to a local hospital for treatment and then returned to Boston, where his treatment continued with his own doctor.
Guitarist Joe Perry said: “Words can’t express the sadness I feel for having to cancel this tour,” adding: “We hope we can get the Aerosmith machine up and running again as soon as possible.”
Brad Whitford, also an Aerosmith guitarist, commented: “We never anticipated this tour coming to such a swift and unfortunate ending.”
He went on to say: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Steven for a speedy recovery and return to good health.”
