‘Staycations’ are this year’s trend in the U.K.
August 17, 2009
A seventeen percent drop in those travelling abroad heralds the rise of the ‘staycation’ in the U.K. In March this year experts in the travel industry predicted that the year would be the year of the staycation as the recession hit pockets and the Met. Office predicted a heatwave that would result in a “barbecue summer”. The heatwave never arrived, but this doesn’t seem to have affected many peoples decision to stay in the U.K.
Visit Britain’s Elliot Frisby says that ‘Lots of people are looking at their wallet and working out how best to spend their money. They are realising that there are a lot of options here – and it’s all fairly close together.”
The Office of National statistics have released figures that show that 4.87 million people travelled overseas in June this year compared to 5.98 million in the same month last year. The travel agent Thomas Cook said that it is not going to hit its targets this year as less people are choosing to travel abroad.
Frisby said that the most popular destinations for those having a staycation are Cornwall and the Lake District.
According to the Camping and Caravan Club bookings at its 1,400 sites across the U.K. have shot up this year by a third.
